OGSM

Also called Objective, goals, strategies and measures

A one-page plan that links an objective to measurable goals, the strategies to reach them, and the measures that track each strategy.

How it's worked out

Objective (words) → goals (numbers) → strategies (choices) → measures (numbers for each strategy)

OGSM separates the result you want from the choices you'll make to get it, and gives each choice its own measure. That makes it easy to see which strategy is working.

Large organisations often like it because a plan can cascade: one team's strategies become the next team's objective.

In practice

Objective: become the default tool for new teams. Goal: weekly active accounts to 1,050. Strategy: improve trial activation. Measure: activation from 40% to 50%.

Common mistake

Listing every activity as a strategy. A strategy is a choice, which means saying what you won't do.

Where it comes from

A planning format with roots in Japanese management practice, made widely known by Procter & Gamble, which has used it since the 1980s.
