Staff designer

Also calledPrincipal designer, Staff / principal designer

A senior individual contributor who works across teams on problems nobody owns, buying leverage for the organisation rather than extra output.

Staff and principal designers sit above senior on the IC ladder. Instead of owning one product area, they take on the ambiguous, cross-cutting problems: a navigation model that spans products, a pricing experience several teams touch, or a design direction the whole company needs to agree on.

Their value shows up as better decisions in other people's work, so it is harder to see than a feature shipped. That is why the role needs a named problem to point at.

Common mistake

Hiring into a level rather than a gap. A staff designer with no defined ambiguous problem tends to drift into being a very expensive product designer.
