Build vs buy

Also calledMake or buy decision

The decision between building a capability in-house and buying an existing product, weighed on cost, control, speed and focus.

Building gives control and a perfect fit, at the cost of engineering time now and maintenance forever. Buying is faster and shares the maintenance, at the cost of fees and less control.

The usual rule of thumb: build what differentiates you, buy what does not. An experimentation platform, for example, is rarely a company's competitive advantage, but the experiments run on it can be.
