CFRs (conversations, feedback and recognition)

Also called CFR

Regular one-to-one conversations, two-way feedback and recognition, used alongside goals so they're talked about rather than only scored.

How it's worked out

Conversations (regular check-ins) + feedback (both ways) + recognition (for effort and learning, not just results)

Goals set once a quarter and graded at the end tend to be forgotten in between. CFRs keep them alive: what's in the way this week, what should change, what's going well.

They work with any goal format: OKRs, a North Star or OGSM.

In practice

A weekly fifteen-minute check-in on the team's two key results, with one thing to stop and one person to thank.

Common mistake

Turning check-ins into status reports. The point is to remove blockers and adjust, not to read out numbers.

Where it comes from

John Doerr's companion to OKRs, described in Measure What Matters (2018).
