Flow

Also called Flow state

The state of being fully absorbed in a task, which happens when the challenge matches a person's skill and feedback is clear.

Flow needs a balance: too hard and people get anxious, too easy and they get bored. Clear goals and immediate feedback keep them in the zone, and distractions knock them out.

Design for it by removing interruptions during focused work, giving instant feedback, and raising the difficulty as people get better. Games do this deliberately; work tools often break it with pop-ups and notifications.

In practice

A writing app with a distraction-free mode that hides everything but the text, and saves without asking, helps people stay in the flow.

Common mistake

Interrupting people mid-task with announcements, surveys or upsells. Each one costs far more than the seconds it takes to dismiss.

Where it comes from

Described by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi from the 1970s, and set out for a general audience in Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (1990).
