Rework

Also calledAvoidable rework

Work that has to be done again because it was wrong the first time, such as rebuilding a feature after users could not use it.

Rework is one of the biggest hidden costs in product development. Some of it is unavoidable learning; much of it comes from building before the problem was understood or before the design was finished.

Research, prototyping and design QA are mainly rework-prevention activities. They spend a little time early to avoid spending a lot later.

Common mistake

Quoting a precise industry figure for it. Claims such as 'developers spend half their time on avoidable rework' circulate in several incompatible forms with no traceable study behind them.
