Take rate

Also called Commission rate, Rake

The share of each transaction a marketplace keeps as revenue.

How it's worked out

Marketplace revenue ÷ gross merchandise value × 100. Net revenue = GMV × take rate

A higher take rate earns more per transaction but gives sellers a reason to deal directly or move elsewhere. It has to match the value the marketplace adds.

Payments, delivery and promotion are the usual ways marketplaces justify a higher one.

In practice

A 12% take rate on $600,000 of GMV is $72,000 of net revenue.

Common mistake

Raising the take rate to hit a revenue target without watching seller churn.
