Open card sort
A card sort where participants create and name their own groups. It shows how people would organise the content from scratch.
With no categories given, participants reveal their own mental model: which items they think belong together and the words they use for each group.
Use it early, when you do not have a structure yet. The group names are often as valuable as the groupings, because they suggest navigation labels in the user's language.
