Outcome vs output

Also calledOutcomes over outputs

Output is what a team ships; an outcome is the change it causes, such as more customers finishing checkout. Outcomes are what matter.

Output is easy to count: screens designed, features shipped, tickets closed. Outcomes are harder to measure but are the reason the work exists: higher conversion, fewer support calls, customers who stay.

Teams measured on output optimise for shipping. Teams measured on outcomes optimise for results, and are allowed to ship less when less works better.

In practice

'Redesign the onboarding flow' is an output. 'Raise the share of new users who complete setup in their first session from 40 to 55 per cent' is an outcome.
