Visual design

The look of a product: typography, colour, imagery, spacing and the overall aesthetic that communicates its brand and makes it readable.

Visual design is the layer people notice first. It sets tone and trust, and it does functional work too: contrast, hierarchy and spacing decide what people read first and what they skip.

In a mature team most visual decisions are captured in a design system, so individual designers spend their visual effort on the cases the system does not cover yet.
