Craft

Also calledDesign craft, Visual craft, Craftsmanship

The quality of the making itself: how well a design is executed in its detail, from spacing and type to motion, copy and edge cases.

When designers talk about craft, they mean the difference between a design that works and one that feels right. Two screens can have the same flow and the same features, and one can still be clearer, calmer and more trustworthy because of hundreds of small decisions about alignment, hierarchy, wording, states and timing.

Craft is not decoration. A missing loading state, an error message that blames the user or a button that moves when the page loads are craft failures, and they cost conversions and support tickets as surely as a broken flow does.

Good craft is also what makes a product feel consistent. It is usually protected by a design system, careful design QA and a team culture that cares about the last ten per cent.

In practice

A checkout that remembers the card type as you type it, keeps the button in place while it processes, and explains a declined payment in plain words is showing craft. None of those appear in a feature list.

Common mistake

Assuming craft means polish added at the end. Most of it is decided early, in how states, content and edge cases are designed, and is expensive to retrofit.
