Delivery velocity

Also calledVelocity, Throughput, Developer throughput

How quickly a team turns decisions into shipped work. Design affects it through clear specs, shared components and fewer late changes.

Velocity is about flow, not speed of typing. It drops when engineers wait for decisions, rebuild components that already exist, or redo work because a requirement changed late.

Design raises velocity mostly by removing those delays: settling questions before build starts, handing off complete states, and maintaining a design system so common parts are never rebuilt.

Common mistake

Measuring velocity alone. A team can ship quickly in the wrong direction, so it belongs next to an outcome metric.
